What is a Life Support System? and how does it work?

■ What is a Life Support System?

Our body is like a complex machine.  It is essential that the many organs and systems in our body continue to function properly.  So that we can live a healthy life.  The function of some of these organs is so important that if it stops working properly, every function of the human body is disrupted.

If this vital system of the body fails then a special medical procedure is performed to keep those organs alive, which is called life support system.  Life support is used to help the body function properly again.

Life support system helps in recovery as well as keeping the critically ill patient alive. It is very important for the important organs to keep moving in keeping the body healthy. But when these organs stop working, then many problems start. To control it, the help of life support system is taken.

This system helps in keeping the patient alive as well as recovering him. But it is not necessary to be successful in every case. In some cases the body cannot recover despite life support systems. Due to the malfunction in some parts of the body, there is a need for a support system such as the liver ie lungs. Apart from this, conditions arise when there is serious disease in the liver due to neumonia, drug overdose, blood clot, COPD, cystic fibrosis, lung injury or injury or nerve disease. Apart from this, life support system is also needed in case of sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack, brain stroke or severe head injury. Before placing the patient on the life support system, it is important to know what is the reason for the deterioration of the patient's condition.

■ When is a life support system needed?

Life support systems are needed if any of the four organs of the body - the heart, the brain, the lungs and the kidneys - stop working.  If these four organs fail, the patient is placed on a life support system.  When a person's heart stops working, a life support system like CPR is used by the doctor to ensure blood and oxygen flow throughout the body.  Electric shock (defibrillation) is given for the heart to beat again, and medicines are also given for the heart to work again.

Oxygen is first given by placing the patient on a ventilator so that the air can reach the lungs by creating pressure. This is done in case of pneumonia or failure of the lungs. In this, one tube is attached to the nose or mouth and the other tube is connected to the electric pap. In some cases, sleeping medicine is also given to the patient so that he can feel relaxed during this time. When the heart stops working, efforts are made to start it back. For this, CPR is given so that blood and oxygen can be circulated in the body or an electric shock is given so that the heartbeat can be normal. Apart from this, medicines are given.

You must have heard about dialysis. Dialysis is also part of the life support system. Dialysis is done in case of kidney failure or 80 to 90 percent failure. Through the process of dialysis, the toxic elements accumulated in the body are filtered out and removed. Along with this, water and nutrients are delivered to the body with the help of a pipe. Now the question comes that for how long the life support system is installed. In fact, in only two situations, the patient is removed from the support system. First, when there is improvement as expected and the organs start functioning and the patient no longer needs it.

Second , when there is no hope of improvement in the patient , doctors , with the consent of the relatives , separate the patient from the life support system . Although treatment is continued until the end. Dementia is a term used to refer to the patient's access to life support systems. If a person's memory becomes so weak that he forgets to do everyday tasks, then Suppose he is suffering from dementia. In such a condition, the patient also forgets whether he ate food or not or in which city he is present. Some special cells of the brain of the patient suffering from dementia start dying, due to which the ability of that person to think is reduced. There is also a change in caste and behavior. In many cases, the nature of the patient changes.

■ Types of Dementia

Dementia can be divided into two categories - one that is preventable or treatable and the other that progresses with age.

● The first category includes blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, tumours, tuberculosis, sleep apnea, and vitamin deficiency dementia.

● The second category includes Alzheimer's, Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and Vascular Dementia.

The patient should be seen by a neurologist for the treatment of dementia. If the cause of this disease is vitamin deficiency or side effect of medicines, then treatment is possible. But if it is a rapidly progressing dementia over time, then the scope is less.

During the treatment, the patient has to take special care and at the same time certain types of medicines like acetyl choline are given. These drugs work to enhance memory, but if delayed, their effect can be reduced.
